Meticulous Secures $15M to Accelerate Trust in AI Code Generation

London-based Meticulous, co-founded by siblings Gabriel and Quentin Spencer-Harper, has successfully secured $15 million in Series A funding. This investment round was led by Ethan Kurzweil from VC firm Chemistry, with participation from Menlo Ventures.

Notable angel investors include former operators from top tech firms, such as Lachy Groom from Stripe, Jason Warner from Poolside, Arash Ferdowsi of Dropbox, and former Adobe CPO Scott Belsky, among others.

As AI agents increasingly generate code faster than traditional review processes can manage, developers often face lengthy review cycles rife with bugs, complicating their job. Meticulous aims to bridge this gap by reinforcing the reliability of AI-generated code, allowing developers to ship updates more swiftly.

Streamlining the Development Process

The core objective of Meticulous is to instill confidence in AI-generated code. The platform analyzes a developer’s existing codebase along with the intended application to formulate a thorough checklist addressing every edge case. This includes rare scenarios that might risk application failure.

Whenever there is a code modification, Meticulous conducts simulations of user interactions prior to and subsequent to that change. It identifies any edge cases potentially influenced by the modification.

Before merging any changes into their primary codebase, developers receive a visual report containing a sequence of thumbnails, each showcasing how different edge cases are impacted by the proposed code alterations.

“One thumbnail might depict how a change affects a premium user interface, while another illustrates the same for standard users,” Quentin explains. “This visualization allows developers to quickly grasp the full ramifications of their changes in just a couple of minutes, enabling them to release updates almost as quickly as their AI can generate new code.”

Importantly, no changes are deployed without human oversight. Developers retain the authority to push changes live or request adjustments from their coding agents.

“Our deterministic system allows us to alert users and agents if there are uncovered edge cases relevant to a particular change,” Quentin adds.

Recent Growth and Future Outlook

In the past year, Meticulous has achieved an impressive fivefold growth in its annual recurring revenue (ARR), attracting clients such as Notion, ElevenLabs, Dropbox, Wiz, and LaunchDarkly.

Quentin and Gabriel have deep roots in engineering, with Quentin having spent over a decade at Palantir and Gabriel previously working at Dropbox. Quentin recounts that even in a pre-AI era, engineers spent the bulk of their workdays on code verification rather than writing actual code. This inefficiency became more pronounced with the increasing complexity of software projects.

“At that scale, we lacked any viable solutions to address these challenges,” he notes. “I conceived Meticulous by breaking down these issues from first principles, leading to a practical approach to manage millions of lines of code and countless edge cases.”

“Now, with the rise of AI, engineers are dedicating nearly all their time to verifying AI-generated code outputs before they can launch them,” he adds.

Plans for the Future

A portion of the new funding will be allocated to expanding marketing efforts. "Until now, word of mouth has been our primary strategy," Gabriel indicates, “but we aim to widen our reach and make sure everyone is aware of Meticulous.”

Moreover, investment in research and development will focus on extending testing capabilities to backend and performance aspects, alongside a planned increase in team size. Currently comprising 20 members, the founders aspire to grow to around 30 or 40 within the next year while maintaining a small yet highly skilled team.

Meticulous is actively recruiting forward-deployed engineers (FDE), a role that has gained traction in various European AI startups. FDEs work closely with clients, often on-site, to identify challenges and tailor solutions using their company’s technology.

Gabriel notes the competitive landscape for talent, emphasizing that “the significance of our mission” serves as a magnet for skilled software engineers.
